Building a tour around a major event gives the trip a common thread and adds a memorable experience to the programme. Christmas markets, popular festivals, light installations, cultural gatherings or food events: France offers plenty of opportunities to bring a group together all year round. With CircuitGroupes, tour operators, coach operators, agencies and organisers can complement these major events with cultural visits, gastronomic discoveries and stops tailored to group tourism.
Christmas markets in Alsace: a safe bet for groups
At the end of the year, Alsace becomes one of the most iconic destinations for group travel. Strasbourg, Colmar and the surrounding villages combine Christmas markets, illuminations, half-timbered houses, local specialities and heritage.
In Colmar, the 2026 Christmas markets are scheduled from 23 November to 29 December. The town also provides specific information on parking and coach reception, a point to plan for in advance to build a smooth group programme.
In Strasbourg, the Christmas market is spread across several iconic squares, including Place Broglie, the cathedral, Petite France and Place Kléber. The city also showcases an illuminated trail, local crafts and Alsatian cuisine. The 2026 dates had not yet been officially published on the website when we checked, so they will need to be confirmed before booking.
For a group, a trip can combine a visit to the historic centre, the Christmas market, an Alsatian lunch and a tour of several villages in the region over two or three days.
The Fête des Lumières in Lyon: four evenings of light and creativity
Lyon’s Fête des Lumières (Festival of Lights) is another event particularly well suited to a cultural group trip. The 2026 edition is announced for 5 to 8 December. Over several evenings, sites across the city host light installations that transform the urban landscape into an art trail.
For tour operators, the simplest approach is to build the day around a tour of Lyon before the illuminations begin. Vieux Lyon, the riverbanks, the historic districts or a gastronomic discovery can fill the day, followed by dinner and an illuminated trail in the evening.
The crowds do, however, call for precise organisation. Getting around the city centre, the group’s drop-off point and the meeting place must all be set in advance. The tour will also benefit from realistic walking times between the various installations.
Nuit Blanche in Paris: a different kind of cultural outing
Nuit Blanche offers another way to discover Paris as a group. The 2026 edition took place on 6 June and devoted its programme to contemporary art, with installations, performances and works spread across different districts of Paris and its metropolitan area. The event is organised every year by the City of Paris.
This event suits cultural associations, student groups, higher-education institutions and adult groups who want to build a programme around contemporary art.
To avoid participants scattering, it is better to select one area and a few works close together rather than trying to cover the whole capital. A cultural visit in the afternoon, a reserved dinner and then a Nuit Blanche trail make for a more comfortable programme.
The Nice Carnival: colour and tradition on the Côte d’Azur
The Nice Carnival is one of France’s great winter events. In 2026, it ran from 11 February to 1 March, with carnival corsos, day and night parades and the famous Battles of Flowers.
This period lets you offer a southern destination in the middle of winter. For a group, the carnival can be part of a fuller trip devoted to Nice and the Côte d’Azur.
A day can combine a visit to Old Nice, a stroll along the seafront, a group lunch and then the carnival show. Tickets and seating need to be arranged in advance, especially for a large group that wants to stay together during the parade.
CircuitGroupes also offers tours in the Nice area and lists the Nice Carnival among its programmes, which confirms the appeal of this event for group clients.
The Braderie de Lille: a major popular event in September
The Braderie de Lille is one of France’s best-known popular events. In 2026, it takes place on 5 and 6 September, for 34 hours, from 8 am on Saturday to 6 pm on Sunday. Second-hand dealers, antique dealers, traders and street entertainment take over a large part of the city centre.
For a group, the event can be combined with a visit to Vieux-Lille and its main squares. Access does, however, need careful preparation: traffic restrictions apply in the centre during the Braderie, and the city recommends planning journeys in advance.
A drop-off point outside the restricted area, a meeting place that is very easy to find and a clear regrouping time will help keep the programme running smoothly despite the crowds.
Bordeaux Fête le Vin: plan ahead for the 2027 edition
For groups drawn to gastronomy and terroirs, Bordeaux Fête le Vin is a great basis for a trip to the Gironde. One thing to be aware of: there is no 2026 edition. The next event is scheduled for 7 to 11 July 2027.
The 2027 edition will be particularly special, as it will be held alongside the Tall Ships Races, with large sailing ships moored along the quays. The event will combine tastings, meetings with producers, workshops on Bordeaux wines and regional specialities.
For a tour operator, this event can become the highlight of a tour combining Bordeaux, the vineyards, regional heritage and gastronomic stops. The CircuitGroupes Gastronomy theme also features programmes focused on terroir and culinary discoveries.
How do you build a major event into a group tour?
A major event should not take up the whole trip. It often works better as a highlight around which to build several stops. A heritage visit, a regional lunch, an excursion or a guided discovery help to balance the programme.
For the Fête des Lumières or a Christmas market, for example, schedule visits during the day and the event in the evening. For the Braderie de Lille, give participants more free time. For Bordeaux Fête le Vin, the programme can alternate between the city and the vineyards.
The CircuitGroupes Culture and Heritage pages let you complement these events with programmes already designed for groups.
