The buildings and bell towers of the Royal Abbey of Fontevraud

The venue

One of the largest monastic cities in Europe, necropolis of the Plantagenets. Founded in 1101 by Robert of Arbrissel near Saumur, the royal abbey of Fontevraud covers 13 hectares. After the Revolution it was turned into a prison, which it remained until 1963.

The Grand-Moûtier monastery, open to the public, brings together the abbey church, the Romanesque kitchen, the 12th-century Saint-Benoît chapel, the cloister, the chapter house and the 16th-century infirmaries. The abbey church holds four early 13th-century effigies, including those of Henry II, Richard the Lionheart and Eleanor of Aquitaine. The abbey has been part of the Loire Valley UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2000.

For groups : Adult groups of 20 or more can book a private tour led by a cultural mediator, for up to 50 people at the abbey and 20 at the Musée d'Art moderne. Tours are also offered in several foreign languages, and the visitor services department helps choose the most suitable tour for the group. The site has a hotel and a restaurant.
