The venue
The largest Gothic cathedral in France, brought to colour by a light show. Begun in the 13th century, Notre-Dame d’Amiens is the largest cathedral in France by interior volume, at around 200,000 m³. It has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1981.
Its west front is renowned for its 13th-century Gothic sculptures. Cleaning of the portals revealed traces of their original colours, recreated by a light show at the end of the year and in summer. Inside, visitors discover the labyrinth set in the floor and the oak choir stalls from the early 16th century. Close by, the belfry, rebuilt in the early 15th century, has been a World Heritage Site since 2005.
For groups : The Amiens tourist office organises a 1 hour 30 minute guided tour of the cathedral for groups, with 30 people per guide, as well as one-hour themed tours on construction, sculpture or polychromy. An audio guide, available in eight languages, is booked in advance, except during religious ceremonies. The belfry can be visited in groups of 18 people per guide, for 1 hour 30 minutes, including a climb of about a hundred steps to the terrace.
