The venue
Europe’s largest freshwater aquarium, with species from rivers all over the world. Formerly known as the Aquarium du Val de Loire, it is now called the Grand Aquarium de Touraine. Located in Lussault-sur-Loire, between Tours and Amboise, near the Loire, it covers 5,000 m² and has 70 tanks, including a 30-metre freshwater tunnel devoted to the species of France’s rivers.
Some 12,000 fish are on display: carp, pike, sturgeon and catfish, as well as exotic species such as piranhas, seahorses and Orinoco stingrays, alongside caimans and turtles. A shark tunnel and an area where the day-night cycle is reversed, so that the catfish can be seen when active, complete the visit.
For groups : Adult groups qualify for a group rate from 20 paying people, with compulsory booking and a single payment by the organisation; associations and specific audiences are welcome with no minimum. The visit is self-guided or guided, for about one hour. The coach driver is invited, and a partner restaurant in Amboise, « La Bonne Etape », offers a set menu to groups of more than 20 people.
