The Arena of Nîmes and the statue of a bullfighter on the square

The venue

One of the best-preserved Roman amphitheatres in the world. Built from around AD 90, at the end of the 1st century, to entertain the people of the colony of Nemausus, the Arènes de Nîmes became a fortified village during the great invasions, then an inhabited district until the 19th century.

Cleared in the 19th century, the monument has kept the appearance of its façade, with 60 arches on each level and its attic, as well as much of its tiered seating and internal circulation system. Open to visitors outside events, it also hosts bullfights, Camargue races, concerts and historical re-enactments such as the Roman Days.

For groups : Groups can explore the Arena on their own with an audio guide in about an hour, or combine the Arena, the Maison Carrée and the Tour Magne in three hours. Guided tours of the same routes are offered for groups of 20 to 50 people. Group rates apply from 20 people, with free admission for one group leader and for the driver, and cancellation is free up to 48 hours before the visit.
