The Bay of the Somme at rising tide, under a cloudy sky

The venue

Nature outings to discover the seals and landscapes of the bay. On the Picardy coast, the Baie de Somme is in fact a 70 km² estuary, protected for its great ecological richness. It is a major site for birdlife, lined by the ports of Le Crotoy, Saint-Valery-sur-Somme and Le Hourdel.

The bay is home to colonies of harbour seals and grey seals, which should be observed from more than 300 metres away so as not to disturb them. At low tide, the estuary turns into an archipelago of sandbanks. A cycle path links Le Crotoy to Saint-Valery, and the Baie de Somme railway serves several coastal towns.
