The venue
A zoo laid out in former troglodyte quarries. Founded in 1961 in Doué-la-Fontaine, about twenty kilometres from Saumur, the Bioparc covers 17 hectares in the heart of former stone quarries, which gives it a distinctive troglodyte character.
It is home to more than 1,900 animals of 130 species, including black rhinoceroses and okapis, which are rare in French zoos. A member of the European Association of Zoos and Aquaria, the park takes part in European programmes for endangered species and supports “Nature Projects” to protect natural habitats around the world. The rocky setting of the quarries makes the visit unusual.
For groups : The group rate applies from 20 paying people, with free admission for the coach driver and free, shaded parking for coaches. A self-guided visit, punctuated by the keepers' daily talks, takes from four hours to a full day; groups can also be accompanied by a guide on a guided or privilege tour. The 100-seat restaurant offers group menus. Bookings must be confirmed at least 10 days in advance for a self-guided visit, and three weeks in advance with a guided tour or meal.
