The venue
A boat trip to discover the limestone calanques between Marseille and Cassis. A succession of coves and inlets along more than twenty kilometres of coastline, the Calanques have been protected since 2012 by the Calanques National Park, Europe’s first peri-urban national park covering both land and sea.
A calanque is a valley carved by a river and then flooded by the sea. From the water, you pass white limestone cliffs, coves and islets. At the eastern end of the massif, near Cassis, come Port-Miou, a former quarry turned marina, Port-Pin and the fjord-like En-Vau. Some calanques, such as Devenson, lined with 200-metre cliffs, can only be reached by boat or by difficult paths.
For groups : From the port of Cassis, the Cassis boatmen welcome groups, schools and companies on boats carrying 12 to 75 passengers, with tours of 3 to 9 calanques lasting from one hour to 2 hours 20 minutes. Small boats with a skipper can be privately chartered for up to 12 people, and tours with swimming stops are offered. Trips depend on the weather, and two manual wheelchairs can be taken on board under certain conditions.
