The venue
A monumental audiovisual show projected inside a former quarry. In Les Baux-de-Provence, in the heart of the Val d’Enfer, the Carrières de Lumières are a digital art centre presenting immersive exhibitions. White limestone was extracted here to build the castle and town of Les Baux, until the quarries closed in 1935.
Images are projected onto the walls, the ceiling and the huge pillars left by the quarrymen, 7 to 9 metres high. In 1959, Jean Cocteau filmed scenes from The Testament of Orpheus here. The projections began in the late 1970s with Cathédrale d’Images, and the site has had its current name since 2012.
For groups : Groups are welcome from 20 people, with compulsory booking and fixed, limited time slots, with one free place per group; the shows last one hour. One package combines the visit with a snack break at the Café des Carrières, for 20 to 25 people, Monday to Friday. Private visits are also organised in the evening, with the quarries closed to the public, from 15 people.
