The venue
A Gothic masterpiece in pink sandstone, famous for its astronomical clock. Founded in 1015 and built from 1220 onwards, Strasbourg’s Cathédrale Notre-Dame is recognisable by its single tower, topped by a spire added in 1439. At 142 metres, it was the tallest building in the world from 1647 to 1874.
It stands on Place de la Cathédrale, at the heart of the Grande Île, Strasbourg’s historic centre, close to the Palais Rohan. Inside, the astronomical clock, a Renaissance masterpiece brought back into working order in the 19th century by Schwilgué, sets its automata in motion every day. Admired by Victor Hugo and Goethe, the cathedral can be seen from far across the Alsace plain.
For groups : The cathedral is open to all without booking and with no limit on group size, but groups must be equipped with audio headsets, rented from the Batorama shop on the square: general explanations are given outside. There are no visits on Sunday mornings or on feast days when Mass is celebrated, and suitcases and travel backpacks are not allowed. For the astronomical clock presentation, groups of 12 people or more get a reduced rate; tickets are sold only on the day, and a film in French, German and English precedes the chimes.
