Champagne poured into a row of flutes during a cellar visit

The venue

A tour of the historic cellars of the great Champagne houses in Épernay, often nicknamed the « capital of Champagne ». Most of these cellars lie beneath the Avenue de Champagne: a network of about 110 kilometres of galleries dug into the chalk, generally some twenty metres deep.

Above ground, the 1.6-km avenue is lined with the mansions and town houses of the Champagne houses; the Château Perrier and the town hall are protected as historic monuments. The houses on the avenue offer tours of their cellars followed by tastings. The whole area has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2015, as part of the « Champagne Hillsides, Houses and Cellars ».

For groups : The group department of the Épernay tourist office organises, from 10 to 15 people depending on the programme, days that combine a guided tour of the cellars of a major champagne house, followed by a tasting, with a discovery of the Avenue de Champagne. This is led by a qualified guide, on foot in 1 to 2 hours or aboard the group's coach, in French, English, German, Dutch, Spanish or Italian depending on availability. Coach parks are located on Rue Jean Chandon Moët and Rue Jean Moët, near the tourist office.
