The Château de Chenonceau and its arched gallery spanning the Cher

The venue

A château spanning the Cher, nicknamed the Ladies’ Château. Built from 1513 to 1521 by Katherine Briçonnet, it was enriched by Diane de Poitiers, who had a bridge built to the opposite bank, then enlarged under Catherine de’ Medici with two superimposed galleries raised on this bridge.

Its two-storey gallery overlooking the Cher makes it one of the jewels of Loire Valley architecture, blending Italian influences with French features. A visit reveals a residence shaped by successive women, from Louise of Lorraine to Louise Dupin, who saved it during the Revolution, and Madame Pelouze, who transformed it.

For groups : Groups of more than 20 people visit freely, with an explanatory leaflet, or with an audio guide, and book through the group reservations department. School groups visit with or without an audio guide, including a 45-minute tour adapted to children aged 7 to 12, and a teaching pack is available on reservation. The château is open every day, all year round.
