The venue
An early 17th-century château with exceptional interior decoration, Cormatin stands on an island in the Grosne river, in Saône-et-Loire. Its construction was begun in 1606 by Antoine du Blé d’Uxelles. It retains rare original features, in particular its open-well staircase, the oldest of its kind preserved in France.
The 17th-century apartments have kept their carved wooden fireplaces, panelling, painted beamed ceilings and furniture. The Saint Cecilia cabinet, decorated with lapis lazuli and gilding, is one of the highlights. The château is surrounded by a twelve-hectare park with flower beds and a boxwood maze, recreated from 1990 onwards.
For groups : Groups of 20 people or more are welcome by appointment from mid-March to the end of November; booking is compulsory, otherwise the visit of the interior cannot be guaranteed. The guided tour of the 17th-century apartments lasts one hour, after which the park can be explored freely in 30 to 45 minutes.
