The venue
A medieval fortress, birthplace of William the Conqueror. Standing on a rocky spur overlooking the Ante valley in Falaise, in the Calvados, it is one of the first Norman castles built in stone.
The earliest traces of stone fortifications date back to the 10th century. Birthplace of the future King of England and one of his main residences, the castle is at once a stronghold, a symbol of the power of the Dukes of Normandy and the cradle of the Anglo-Norman dynasty. Owned by the town and listed as a historic monument, it offers a tangible approach to the history of medieval Normandy and its dukes.
For groups : The group rate applies from 15 people, with one free admission for every 20 paid; groups of fewer than 20 can also book a one- or two-hour privilege tour. The visit is self-guided, with touchscreen tablets showing reconstructions and augmented-reality spaces, sheltered from the rain and in keeps that are heated in winter. Set on a rocky spur, the site remains difficult to access for people with reduced mobility, and the keeps cannot be visited in a wheelchair. The castle closes each year between January and February.
