The Château de Foix and its three towers above the town

The venue

A comital fortress overlooking the town, the château of Foix is the symbol of the Counts of Foix. A 12th-century fortified castle whose origins seem to go back to the 10th century, it stands on a rocky platform that controlled access to the upper Ariège valley.

The castle came through the Albigensian Crusade in the 13th century and was probably improved by Gaston Fébus, Count of Foix from 1343 to 1391. Seat of the governor of the County of Foix from the 15th century, remodelled several times and extensively restored in the 19th century, it now houses the departmental museum of the Ariège. It has been a listed historic monument since 1840.

For groups : The group visit, by reservation, takes place in three stages: the museum, the castle, then workshops devoted to medieval weapons, stone cutting, the forge or full-scale war and building machines, for a total of about four hours. A guide can be provided on request, and themed tours with a costumed character are offered.
