The venue

Residence of French sovereigns for eight centuries, with a major collection of period furniture. First mentioned in 1137, the château was home to sovereigns from Francis I, who made it his favourite residence, to Napoleon III. Napoleon I called it the « house of centuries », and it was here that he abdicated in 1814.

The château combines medieval, Renaissance and classical architecture, set in a vast park next to the Fontainebleau forest. Francis I brought Italian artists here, giving rise to the School of Fontainebleau. The château also holds an outstanding collection of paintings, sculptures and objets d’art. Together with its park, it has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1981.

For groups : The group rate applies from 20 people, and groups of 10 or more can book a visit of the château with an external guide. Self-guided visits are possible every day except Tuesday, with a video guide available in 11 languages. A coach park is located on Boulevard Magenta, very close to the entrance, and admission is free for the guide and the coach driver accompanying the group.
