The Château de Sully-sur-Loire, its towers and pointed roofs

The venue

A medieval fortress on the Loire, once the residence of Sully. Construction of the present château began in 1396, to plans by Raymond du Temple, the king’s architect. In 1602, Maximilien de Béthune, the future Duke of Sully, became its owner: he adapted it to his own use and created a park.

Surrounded by moats still filled with water, at the confluence of the Loire and the Sange, the château has two parts: the keep, flanked by four round towers, and the small château, a 15th-century residence. On the first floor of the keep, the great hall retains its 17th-century wooden doors. The château sheltered the young Louis XIV during the Fronde in 1652, then Voltaire, exiled by the Regent, in 1715.

For groups : Groups of at least 20 people, such as associations, tour operators or clubs, are welcomed by reservation only, with a dedicated contact person. The guided tour lasts about 1 hour 30 minutes and traces the history of the château. It can be offered in several foreign languages, depending on guide availability.
