The venue
A 17th-century château that inspired Versailles, Vaux-le-Vicomte is surrounded by gardens designed by André Le Nôtre. It was built between 1658 and 1661 in Maincy, near Melun, for Nicolas Fouquet, Louis XIV’s Superintendent of Finances.
Fouquet brought together the architect Louis Le Vau, the painter Charles Le Brun and the landscape designer André Le Nôtre, whom the king would later employ at Versailles. On 17 August 1661, he held a famous celebration there in honour of Louis XIV, with shows, theatre, including a play by Molière, and fireworks. A masterpiece of Classical architecture, the château is today the largest privately owned listed historic monument in France.
