The pink sandstone walls of Haut-Kœnigsbourg castle overlooking the Alsace plain

The venue

A restored medieval fortress overlooking the Alsace plain, the Haut-Kœnigsbourg stands at an altitude of 757 metres in the Vosges mountains, in the commune of Orschwiller. A 12th-century fortified castle, extensively remodelled in the 15th century, it was in ruins when it was given to Emperor Wilhelm II in 1899.

Its restoration, carried out from 1901 to 1908 by the architect Bodo Ebhardt, aimed to return it to its appearance around 1500. The castle thus reflects both medieval military architecture and Wilhelm II’s romantic vision of the Middle Ages; his coat of arms can still be seen there. It is one of the most visited sites in Alsace.

For groups : Groups benefit from a dedicated rate from 20 people. The castle can be visited independently or with an audio guide without booking, while the guided tour must be booked. Admission is free for the coach driver, on presentation of a professional card, for the professional tour escort and for the leader of a group of at least 20 paying people.
