The box-hedge formal gardens in front of the Château de Villandry

The venue

Famous for its terraced Renaissance gardens and its ornamental kitchen garden. The last of the great châteaux built along the Loire in the 16th century, Villandry lies about fifteen kilometres west of Tours. Its gardens were recreated from 1906 onwards by Joachim Carvallo, based on drawings by the architect Jacques Androuet du Cerceau.

The estate covers more than six hectares laid out on four levels of terraces. Visitors discover the ornamental kitchen garden, the ornamental garden of clipped box hedges evoking the gardens of love, the water garden arranged around a Louis XV-era reflecting pool and, on the upper terrace, the sun garden. The château and gardens have been listed as a historic monument since 1934.

For groups : Groups are welcomed from 15 people, for a free, guided or audio-guided visit of the château and/or the gardens. Free coach and minibus car parks are located right next to the château, and the estate's restaurant, La Doulce Terrasse, offers group menus on reservation throughout the season. School classes, from nursery to the end of lower secondary school, can take a free or guided tour of the gardens and workshops.
