The venue
A Vauban fortification overlooking the city, with several museums and a zoo. Begun in 1668, it covers 11 hectares on top of Mont Saint-Étienne, 130 metres above the Doubs. Since 2008 it has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List, as one of twelve Vauban fortifications.
The site brings together three museums with the “Musée de France” label: the Museum of the Resistance and Deportation, the Musée comtois and the Muséum, which includes a zoological garden, an aquarium, an insectarium, a noctarium and a naturalium. A group can thus combine military history, remembrance, regional traditions and natural sciences, among the bastions overlooking the meander of the Doubs.
For groups : The group rate applies from 20 adults, with free admission for one group leader and for the driver. Besides the self-guided visit of the site, museums and animal areas, groups can book, subject to availability, a guided tour, a tour led by an actor or the « Citadelle secrète » tour with its underground gallery, limited to 18 people and offered from April to October. The formats last from 30 minutes to 1 hour 30 minutes, and the visitor app is available in seven languages. Some tours are difficult for people with walking difficulties.
