The venue
A fortified upper town perched on white limestone cliffs. Built gradually from the 12th century onwards, the citadel protected Bonifacio, an important stronghold of the Republic of Genoa for its trade with Liguria and Sardinia and for control of the Strait of Bonifacio.
More than a citadel, it is a presidio, the first built by the Genoese in Corsica: a fortified town whose inhabitants were responsible for defending it. The town stands on a limestone plateau edged on the sea side by a cliff about 60 metres high. Traces of its military past remain, such as the King of Aragon’s Staircase and the bastions added from 1580.
For groups : The Office municipal de tourisme runs a one-and-a-half-hour guided tour of the citadel, for individuals and groups alike, by reservation. It starts from the office, rue Fred Scamaroni, winds through the lanes of the upper town and includes entry to the Bastion de l'Étendard and the King of Aragon's staircase.
