The venue
A Genoese fortress overlooking the bay of Calvi. Built at the water’s edge, the citadel dates from the period of Genoese rule: its defences were strengthened from 1483, reinforced in 1545 and completed in the 17th century. The pediment above its entrance bears the motto « Civitas Calvi Semper Fidelis ».
Its ramparts, made up of four main bastions, are listed as a historic monument. The upper town is home to the Saint-Antoine oratory, the Saint-Jean-Baptiste cathedral, the former Governors’ palace and the house of Laurent Giubega, where Napoleon Bonaparte stayed in 1793. A visitor trail leads through this historic site, marked in particular by the siege of 1794.
