The cobbled courtyard of the Citadel of Port-Louis, home of the Musée de la Compagnie des Indes

The venue

A citadel housing the collections of the Musée de la Compagnie des Indes (East India Company Museum). Built in the 16th century by the Spanish and altered in the 17th century by the French, the Citadelle de Port-Louis guards the entrance to the Lorient harbour. Together with its ramparts, it has been a listed historic monument since 1948.

The Musée de la Compagnie des Indes, housed in the citadel since 1984, tells the story of Lorient and of the East India companies in the 17th and 18th centuries. The site is also home to the National Navy Museum and to spaces devoted to sea rescue. The visit combines military architecture, maritime history and long-distance trade.

For groups : Groups book a guided tour at a flat rate: one or more guides-conférenciers, approved by the Ministry of Culture, are dedicated to them for about one and a half hours, and the tour can be given in English. About two hours should be allowed to discover the whole site. The museum is accessible to people with disabilities.
