The venue
Fortified medieval city, considered the largest fortress in Europe. Overlooking the Aude valley, the Cité de Carcassonne owes its fame to its double ring of walls, almost 3 kilometres long and punctuated by fifty-two towers. Its origins go back to Gallo-Roman times, and it has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1997.
Saved from destruction in the 19th century thanks to the archaeologist Jean-Pierre Cros-Mayrevieille, it was restored, sometimes controversially, under the direction of Viollet-le-Duc. Inside the ramparts, visitors discover the Château Comtal and the Basilica of Saint-Nazaire. The château and the fortifications are managed by the Centre des monuments nationaux.
For groups : For the château and ramparts, booking is compulsory for all groups: online from 10 people for a self-guided adult visit, through the reservations service for other formats, and groups without a booking are refused entry. The group rate for self-guided visits applies from 20 paying adults, and groups enter through a dedicated queue at their booked time slot. A guided lecture tour takes up to 30 people, with a possible supplement for certain languages, and a discovery tour up to 35 people.
