The venue

An interactive museum dedicated to the oceans and marine sciences. In Biarritz, the Cité de l’Océan is an educational theme park devoted to the ocean and surfing. Together with the Biarritz Aquarium it forms Biarritz Océan, which aims to improve knowledge of the ocean and encourage respect for it.

The building, designed by the American architect Steven Holl opposite Ilbarritz beach, takes the shape of a double wave. Inside, multimedia and interactive displays explore the birth of the ocean, the seabed, the Capbreton canyon, polar environments and the ocean’s fury. A virtual surfing area completes the visit, which is well suited to school groups.

For groups : The Cité de l'Océan welcomes groups of 20 or more, adults or children from age 6, for self-guided or guided visits. The visit can be extended with a discovery of the rocky foreshore or combined with the Biarritz Aquarium, over one or two days. For adult groups, admission is free for the driver and one group leader. The visit lasts three hours on average, and the free car park can take coaches.
