The tree-fern garden under the glass roof of the Cité du Design

The venue

A former arms factory converted into a venue dedicated to design and creation. Opened in 2009 on the site of the Saint-Étienne arms factory, the Cité du Design aims to introduce design to all audiences. It brings together a design centre and the Saint-Étienne School of Art and Design.

The site combines restored industrial buildings with contemporary architecture. La Platine, a 200-metre-long building covered with a « skin » of triangular panels, houses the temporary exhibition halls. A 32-metre observation tower overlooks the complex. The Cité also hosts the Saint-Étienne International Design Biennial.

For groups : A group has a minimum of 10 people and a maximum of 20, and is booked through the reservation department. A guided tour can be added to the admission ticket, and tours of the temporary exhibitions are arranged on request. The site has accessible toilets and a wheelchair available, and offers tours and workshops adapted to visitors with disabilities.
