The venue
The house and gardens at Giverny inspired Claude Monet’s Water Lilies. The Impressionist painter settled here in 1883 and lived here until his death in 1926. Owned by the Académie des beaux-arts, the site holds the « Jardin remarquable » (Remarkable Garden) and « Maison des Illustres » labels.
The garden has two parts: the Clos Normand, in front of the house, and the water garden, where a branch of the Epte feeds the water-lily pond spanned by the Japanese bridge. The house, with its pink roughcast and green shutters, shows the colours chosen by Monet: a yellow dining room hung with Japanese prints and a kitchen tiled in blue and white earthenware. It is one of the most visited places in Normandy.
For groups : From April to early November, groups of 20 participants or more are admitted, by reservation only with the group department, and the self-guided visit of the house and gardens takes 1 hour 30 minutes to 2 hours. An independent qualified guide can accompany the group, but may only give commentary in the gardens. Coaches drop groups off at a dedicated car park, five minutes' walk from the group entrance, and park free of charge at the Prairie car park; the driver and one escort enter free.
