A Corsican railway train in a station at the foot of the mountains

The venue

Crossing the island by train through mountains and maquis. The metre-gauge network is 232 km long and links four of Corsica’s main towns. Corsicans nickname it u Trinichellu, “the little train”.

The main line runs 158 km from Bastia to Ajaccio, via Ponte-Leccia, Corte and Vizzavona; a second line serves the Balagne as far as L’Île-Rousse and Calvi. The often winding route includes many tunnels and viaducts, among them the 3,916-metre Vizzavona tunnel and the Vecchio bridge, whose metal deck was built by the Eiffel company. Towards the coast, the Balagne line offers views of the sea.
