The venue
The largest open-air museum in France, the Écomusée d’Alsace forms a reconstructed Alsatian village in Ungersheim, in the Haut-Rhin. Authentic Alsatian buildings, some dating from the 15th century, were dismantled and rebuilt here: half-timbered houses, workers’ houses, a shop, a town hall, a school, a wash house, a farm and a fortified tower.
The museum grew out of the work of volunteers who, in the 1970s, set out to save houses threatened with demolition; it was inaugurated in 1984. The houses are furnished thanks to donations from Alsatians. Traditional work and regional crafts are presented, and an artificial river offers boat rides.
For groups : Groups are welcome from 20 people, and guided tours are offered to them by reservation, in French, German, Alsatian or English. The museum has a restaurant and a catering offer for groups, who can also book a tasting for a fee. The site is only partly accessible to people with reduced mobility.
