The venue
One of the most beautiful canyons in Europe, the Gorges du Verdon can be explored on foot, from the cliff-top roads or on the water. Carved by the Verdon river between the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence and the Var, they form a narrow valley 25 kilometres long and up to 700 metres deep in places.
Two road routes follow the gorges: along the right bank, from Castellane to Moustiers-Sainte-Marie, and along the left bank, from Aiguines to Castellane, with viewpoints such as the Point Sublime. The Martel trail recalls Édouard-Alfred Martel, who led the first expedition to travel down the gorges. Downstream, the river flows into the Lac de Sainte-Croix. The site is part of the Verdon Regional Nature Park.
