Painted horses on the wall of the Grotte Chauvet 2 – Caverne du Pont d'Arc

The venue

A replica of the Chauvet Cave, one of the oldest known decorated caves, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Opened in 2015 in Vallon-Pont-d’Arc and called the Caverne du Pont-d’Arc until 2019, this replica was built on a wooded hill, under the supervision of scientists who study the original cave.

The facsimile reproduces, in a condensed form, the cave walls, the rock formations and the paintings and engravings made more than 30,000 years ago, including many depictions of animals. The artists worked with pigments and charcoal, like the prehistoric painters. For a group, it is a tangible introduction to Palaeolithic art.

For groups : Adult groups qualify for a group rate from 20 paying people, by pre-booking with the groups department, and one professional escort (driver or guide) enters free of charge. The guided tour lasts about one hour; it is given in French, in English on request, and free audio guides are available in ten languages. Groups of more than 20 people can have lunch on site, at the restaurant « la Terrasse », once their visit is booked. The site holds the Tourisme et Handicap label.
