The venue
A cave with remarkable rock formations, the Grand Roc opens halfway up a cliff overlooking the Vézère valley, at Les Eyzies, in the Périgord Noir. Discovered in 1924 by the caver and prehistorian Jean Maury, it was fitted out for tourism and opened to visitors in 1947.
It has no known prehistoric occupation: its interest lies in its highly varied crystallisations, stalagmites, eccentrics, soda straws, draperies and rare calcite triangles, which give the impression of a « mineral forest ». It is one of the prehistoric sites and decorated caves of the Vézère valley listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1979.
For groups : Groups of more than 20 people benefit from a dedicated rate and book through a specific line. The guided group tour lasts 40 minutes on average. During the periods when it is closed to the public, in winter, the cave can open for groups on request, and coach parking is available.
