The venue
A cave visited since the 16th century, rich in concretions and prehistoric remains. Its entrance opens on the banks of the Doubs, in Roset-Fluans, 25 km from Besançon. Visited since 1504, it is one of the oldest known show caves. The site has been listed since 1912.
The route follows almost flat cemented paths through some fifteen chambers decorated with limestone concretions, at a constant temperature of 13 °C. The cave is known as a major burial ground of cave bears, and a few of their skeletons are on display. Visitors can also see a clay altar used by refractory priests during the French Revolution, as well as a bridge built in 1751 over an underground river.
For groups : The cave is open from April to the end of the All Saints' school holidays, with a group rate from 15 people. In spring and autumn, groups of more than 20 people can also be welcomed in the morning by reservation. The visit is self-guided and lasts 1 hour 15 minutes to 1 hour 30 minutes, with a leaflet commenting on eight numbered stops. Parking, a picnic room and a picnic shelter are free at the reception building.
