The venue
The oldest of France’s national studs, nicknamed the “Versailles of the horse”. Located in Le Pin-au-Haras, in the Orne, it grew out of the royal stud administration created by Colbert under Louis XIV. Its stables and château were built between 1715 and 1730, to plans by Robert de Cotte, the King’s First Architect.
The nickname comes from the writer Jean de La Varende, and the classical style of the buildings recalls that of the Versailles stables. The red-brick stables form a horseshoe around the Cour Colbert. The estate, which covers more than 1,000 hectares, is partly protected as a historic monument.
For groups : The Haras welcomes groups all year round, by reservation from 20 people, with one free admission for every 20 tickets purchased. The guided tour lasts 1 h 30 and can be given in English or German at no extra cost; carriage rides are also offered by reservation. It can be combined with a one-hour equestrian show in the manège d'Aure, from April to September and during some school holidays, or, on Thursday afternoons from June to September, with the « Jeudis du Pin » (1 h 30), which end with a parade of horse-drawn carriages.
