The venue
A museum retracing the First World War through three of its belligerents: France, Germany and the United Kingdom. Opened in 1992 in Péronne, at the heart of the Somme battlefields, the Historial is both a museum, with the « Musée de France » designation, and an international research centre.
The white concrete building, designed by the architect Henri Ciriani, extends Péronne’s medieval castle. The German, British and French collections are displayed side by side; uniforms and weapons are shown in white marble pits that evoke the trenches. Visitors can also see the series of fifty etchings « Der Krieg » (The War), made in 1924 by Otto Dix.
For groups : Groups of 20 people or more are welcome, by reservation with a dedicated department, and full-day programmes are offered to groups of at least 40 people. The guided tour of the museum lasts from 1 hour to 1 hour 30 minutes. Admission is free for the driver and one group leader, free coach parking is available nearby, and the Historial offers lunches, breakfasts, packed lunches or picnics.
