The venue
An Atlantic island reached by boat, with wild coastlines and the port of La Meule. The Île d’Yeu forms the commune of L’Île-d’Yeu on its own, in the Vendée. Together with Noirmoutier and the Île du Pilier, it is one of only three islands of the former province of Poitou.
Its two coasts are very different: to the east, a sandy, green coastline, home to Port-Joinville, the main town; to the west, a rocky granite “wild coast” of coves and cliffs. In the south-west, the ruins of the Vieux Château, built by the sea around the early 14th century and dismantled under Louis XIV, can still be visited.
