The venue
A former bunker built to launch V2 rockets, La Coupole is now a museum devoted to the Occupation and space exploration. Built by Nazi Germany in 1943 and 1944 in a former chalk quarry near Saint-Omer, the complex never came into service: Allied bombing prevented its completion.
Opened in 1997, the history centre is explored through the former tunnels before reaching the space beneath the huge concrete dome. The exhibitions cover life in occupied Nord-Pas-de-Calais, German missiles and the history of spaceflight, including a V1 and a V2. The site also houses the memorial to those shot and deported from the Nord and Pas-de-Calais, as well as a planetarium.
For groups : Groups of 15 people or more are welcome, with compulsory booking. The self-guided visit uses the HistoPad, an augmented reality tablet, and takes about 2 hours, while the tour led by one of the centre's guides requires at least 1 hour 30 minutes; a one-hour planetarium session, led by a facilitator, can complete it. The site has a coach park, a picnic area, a dining area by reservation and access for people with reduced mobility, and the driver enters free of charge.
