The Canal de l'Ourcq and the red follies of the Parc de la Villette

The venue

A large cultural park in Paris, bringing together the Philharmonie, the Cité des Sciences and several performance venues. Opened in 1987 in the 19th arrondissement, the Parc de la Villette occupies the site of the former slaughterhouses built under Napoleon III and covers 55 hectares, 33 of them green spaces.

Designed by the architect Bernard Tschumi, it is punctuated by 26 red pavilions known as “follies” and by themed gardens. It is home to the Grande Halle, the Zénith, the Cité de la Musique, now part of the Philharmonie de Paris, and the Cité des Sciences et de l’Industrie. The park also hosts festivals, such as the open-air cinema in summer.

For groups : The groups department organises guided tours of the park, in French or English, devoted to its contemporary architecture and themed gardens. Local authorities, works councils and tourism professionals receive preferential rates according to group size, up to 200 people, and packages combining hotels, restaurants and cruises; a private space can be booked before or after an activity, with catering on request. A coach parking space is provided free of charge, subject to advance booking.
