The venue
A history museum devoted to the Second World War and to peace. Holding the “Musée de France” label, the Mémorial de Caen also traces the wider history of the 20th century and is a member of the International Network of Museums for Peace.
Its galleries cover the period from 1919 to 1989, from the Treaty of Versailles to the fall of the Berlin Wall. The Second World War section deals with total war, the D-Day landings and the Battle of Normandy; a wing opened in 2002 is devoted to the Cold War. The Mémorial also holds lectures, meetings and temporary exhibitions, and its permanent galleries are updated regularly.
For groups : Groups visit the Mémorial on their own, with audio guides, or with a guide. From 20 people, they have a reserved restaurant with 180 seats per sitting and a set menu for the whole group. Day packages combine the visit, lunch and, in the afternoon, either a five-hour tour of the D-Day beaches with a guide trained by the Mémorial's historians on board the group's coach, or a screening at the Arromanches 360 circular cinema. Twenty free parking spaces are reserved for coaches on weekdays, except public holidays.
