The venue
A museum retracing the 1916 Battle of Verdun, on the very site of the fighting. The Memorial stands in Fleury-devant-Douaumont, one of the villages destroyed during the First World War. Created in 1967 on the initiative of the National Committee for the Remembrance of Verdun, chaired by Maurice Genevoix, it reopened in 2016 after renovation and extension.
The exhibition presents the battle from a Franco-German perspective, with an educational layout. More than 2,000 objects are on display, from uniforms and military equipment to items from life at the front and on the home front, accompanied by sound recordings, videos and photographs. On the top floor, a terrace overlooks the landscape of the battlefield, with explanations.
For groups : Groups of 20 or more are welcomed all year round, with compulsory reservation at least two months in advance. The self-guided visit of the Memorial takes about 1 hour 30 minutes, and that of the Douaumont and Vaux forts about one hour each, with visit sheets in several languages. Guided tours last 1 hour 15 minutes, for a maximum of 25 people, in French, English or German. One free place is granted per 20 people, as well as for the driver.
