The venue
The Museum of European and Mediterranean Civilisations, at the entrance to the Old Port. A national museum opened in 2013, the year Marseille was European Capital of Culture, the Mucem is devoted to the cultural anthropology of the societies of Europe and the Mediterranean.
It brings together two seafront sites linked by a 130-metre footbridge: the J4, a building by architect Rudy Ricciotti wrapped in a concrete lattice, and Fort Saint-Jean, which overlooks the entrance to the Old Port. Exhibitions combine anthropology, archaeology, history, art history and contemporary art; the Mediterranean Gallery presents the region’s distinctive features. In 2015 the museum received the Council of Europe Museum Prize.
For groups : Adult groups, limited to 25 people including group leaders, book either a guided tour with a museum lecturer or a self-guided visit. For a first visit, the Mucem recommends the 1 hour 30 minute discovery tour, which combines an exhibition and a walk around the site; other tours cover the architecture, Fort Saint-Jean or the migration garden, and audio headsets are lent free of charge for guided tours. During self-guided visits, speaking aloud in the galleries is reserved in particular for tour guides holding a professional card.
