The Governors' Palace in Corte, home of the Musée de la Corse, in front of the mountains

The venue

An ethnographic museum dedicated to Corsican culture and traditions, the Musée de la Corse is housed in the citadel of Corte, in the centre of the island, halfway between Bastia and Ajaccio. It combines a museum of art and history with the regional museum of anthropology of Corsica.

The setting is part of the visit: the citadel, nicknamed the eagle’s nest, was built in the 18th century around a 15th-century castle, at the top of the rock overlooking the town. In the 18th century Corte was the capital of Pasquale Paoli’s government. The site, a listed historic monument open to the public since 1984, offers a panoramic view over the Restonica and Tavignano valleys.

For groups : The museum welcomes groups, who benefit from the reduced rate, and it is accessible to people with reduced mobility. In summer, guided tours take place at set times, except on Sundays and Mondays, and a guided tour of the temporary exhibitions can be requested by reservation, depending on guide availability. School classes book at least three weeks in advance for visits of about 1 hour 30 minutes, which can be given in Corsican or Italian.
