The venue
One of the oldest museums in France, housed in the former ducal palace of Dijon. Seat of the Burgundian State in the 15th century, the palace later became the king’s residence, then the palace of the States of Burgundy in the 17th century, to a design by Jules Hardouin-Mansart. Fully renovated, the museum was inaugurated in 2019 with 1,500 works displayed in 50 rooms.
Its collections, among the richest of French museums, range from Antiquity to contemporary art: painting, sculpture, drawings and decorative arts. The museum is best known for the tombs of the Dukes of Burgundy, displayed in the palace’s great hall. It also holds Egyptian antiquities and Fayum funerary portraits.
For groups : Groups are welcomed by reservation only, through the booking office of the Dijon museums. Accompanied tours, for a maximum of 25 people depending on the layout of the rooms, are led by a museum cultural mediator or by an outside speaker. They are booked by the hour, with the option of extending by half an hour, and school classes must also book, whether for a free or an accompanied visit.
