The Musée des Confluences and its glass-and-steel architecture on the banks of the Saône

The venue

Museum of natural history and society with spectacular architecture. Opened in 2014 in Lyon, at the southern tip of the Presqu’île where the Rhône and the Saône meet, it is the heir to the Guimet natural history museum. Its deconstructivist building was designed by the Coop Himmelb(l)au agency.

The permanent exhibition is divided into four areas: “Origins”, “Species”, “Societies” and “Eternities”. Highlights include the Choulans mammoth, the skeleton of a Camarasaurus, Noh theatre masks and an example of Sputnik 2. A visit that brings together natural sciences and civilisations, to be shared as a group.

For groups : Groups are welcome by reservation only. Tours led by a museum guide, covering the permanent exhibitions, the temporary exhibitions or the architecture, last 1 hour or 1 hour 30 and must be booked at least two weeks in advance. Groups can also visit independently, with a tour guide of their choice or on their own, and the museum adapts its offer for large groups of 40 people or more.
