The venue
A former railway station housing the world’s richest collection of Impressionist paintings. Inaugurated in 1986 in the Gare d’Orsay, built by Victor Laloux from 1898 to 1900, this national museum presents Western art from 1848 to 1914, on the banks of the Seine in Paris’s 7th arrondissement.
It brings together painting, sculpture, decorative arts, graphic arts, photography and architecture. Highlights include Manet’s Luncheon on the Grass and Olympia, Cézanne’s The Card Players, several of Monet’s Rouen Cathedral paintings and Renoir’s Bal du moulin de la Galette. The museum also holds temporary exhibitions devoted to an artist, a movement or a question of art history.
For groups : At the Musée d'Orsay, a group counts from seven people, in addition to the guide, and booking a time slot is compulsory: a group arriving without a reservation is refused entry. Each slot is limited to 25 adults in the permanent collections, and a larger group books several slots. The visit, self-guided or led by a museum guide-lecturer, lasts 1 hour 30 minutes, in the permanent collections or in an exhibition, and a package of audio guides in several languages can be added to a self-guided visit. Bookings are no longer possible in the four days before the visit.
