The Louvre pyramid and the Cour Napoléon lit up at nightfall

The venue

The largest art museum in the world, the Louvre is home to the Mona Lisa and the Venus de Milo, among others. Housed in the Louvre Palace, on the right bank of the Seine, it opened in 1793. Its collections cover Western art from the Middle Ages to 1848, the ancient Near Eastern, Egyptian, Greek, Etruscan and Roman civilisations, and the arts of Islam.

Its most famous pieces also include the Seated Scribe, the Winged Victory of Samothrace and the Code of Hammurabi. The palace itself is part of the visit: a royal residence for eight centuries, it was transformed by Francis I during the Renaissance, before housing the royal collections after Louis XIV left for Versailles. Today the glass pyramid marks its entrance.

For groups : Every group visit requires a time slot booked in advance, for no more than 20 participants plus one escort, or for a small group of 6 participants. The group must be led by a qualified guide holding a speaking permit, everyone using their own earphones, and the visit lasts no more than 3 hours. Large groups check in at the group reception desk under the Pyramid, while small groups enter through the Porte des Lions.
