The venue
One of the richest museums outside Paris, with European painting from the 15th to the 20th century. Montpellier’s main art museum, the Musée Fabre was born of a donation by the painter and collector François-Xavier Fabre, who in 1825 offered his paintings and drawings to the city on condition that a museum be created to house them.
It occupies the Hôtel de Massilian and the former Jesuit college, near the Esplanade, with 9,000 m² of exhibition space since its renovation. Its collection includes more than 2,000 paintings, with nearly 1,000 works on display: Flemish and Dutch painting, French, Italian and Spanish painting, and a group of works by Gustave Courbet.
