The venue
The Villa Lumière traces the invention of the cinematograph by the Lumière brothers. The museum occupies the family villa in the Monplaisir district of Lyon (8th arrondissement). It is home to the Institut Lumière, an association founded in 1982 to preserve and promote film heritage.
It was in Monplaisir that the Lumière brothers designed their Cinématographe, the device that made it possible in 1895 to shoot and project their first film, Workers Leaving the Lumière Factory in Lyon. The museum occupies two floors of the villa. Nearby, the Hangar du Premier-Film, a remnant of the former factory, and the “Wall of Filmmakers”, covered with plaques bearing the names of film personalities who have visited the Institut, complete the visit.
For groups : Adult groups are welcomed for a one-hour guided tour, for up to 30 people, with a flat rate for groups of fewer than 15. On request and for an additional charge, the tour can be given in English, Spanish or Italian. In addition, the Institut Lumière's education team offers adult groups one-hour commented screenings, compilations of film extracts on the history of cinema.
