The red villa of the Musée Matisse amid the ruins of Cimiez, in Nice

The venue

Collections tracing the entire career of the painter Henri Matisse, from his beginnings to his last works. Opened in 1963 in the Villa des Arènes, a 17th-century Genoese villa in the Cimiez district of Nice, the museum gained a modern wing in 1993.

Matisse lived and worked in Nice from 1917 to 1954. The collection, built largely from his own gifts and those of his heirs, includes paintings and paper cut-outs, drawings, prints, sculptures and illustrated books, as well as objects that belonged to the painter. Woman with a Parasol (1905) and Blue Nude IV (1952) are among its masterpieces.

For groups : The group rate applies from 10 people, and a group visit lasts one hour on average. Guided tours for groups are arranged on request, in French, English, German or Italian. The museum is wheelchair accessible.
